In 2004 the PGA honored the legacy of R. Jay Sigel, the top amateur golfer ever born and raised in Pennsylvania. Sigel’s amateur credentials are remarkable. He was a two-time U.S. Amateur Champion, a three-time U.S. Middle-Amateur Champion and a representative of the U.S. on the Walker Cup team nine times, including twice as captain in 1983 and 1985. He was an 11-time Pennsylvania Amateur Champion, a four-time Pennsylvania State Open Champion and a two-time Pennsylvania Junior Champion.
"The Sigel" will host 72 of the best players that the Commonwealth has to offer. The event will begin with two 18-hole stroke play rounds with the top 16 players advancing to match play.

The field will consist of the top 66 players on the previous year’s William C. Fownes, Jr., Amateur Player of the Year standings, champions of the event from the past five years, and the current club champion of the host site. In the unlikely event of full subscription of all guaranteed spots, those tied for the last position on the POY standings will be accepted based on time of entry. The 2018 POY standings resulted in an 11-way tie for the 64th position. If the event is full, those players will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis according to time of entry.
Players who have been accepted as participants in Pennsylvania Golf Association championships will receive event information concerning course assignment, practice rounds, pairings, and starting times approximately 10 days prior to the event. If you have not received your information seven days prior to the event, it is your responsibility to contact the Pennsylvania Golf Association. Information can also be found at
